I have been very lucky. I did my PhD then I worked as a scientist at Newcastle University on two projects. In science terms this is called post doctoral research or post-doc’ing. Then I got a lecturers job here at Sunderland where I have been ever since. I think at the moment it is much harder and I don’t envy the other guys who are just at the beginning of their career.

When I finished my master in Spain it was not the best situation in science to start a PhD there. Funding was being withdrawn and a lot of scientific groups were empty and with no money to do research. That’s the reason why I moved to this country. In here things look a bit easier. Although not everything is an easy path in here I can say that I feel I have more opportunities here. Cheers Asier!

      Hi Asier,

Getting the PhD was a lot of hard work, but now that I am finished with ‘being a student’ and have a post-doc (as Noel mentions below), I am enjoying the work and fast paced nature of my job. I still am early days in the career and am looking forward to what the future holds!

      Cheers,

      Carmen
