Hi Asier! Thanks for your question. When I started to do scientific research I was really interested in cancer. Then, I realised how the immune system has a very important role in cancer as well and it fascinated me. It is really interesting to see that when the immune system is working properly there are not diseases but if it is not then is when diseases such as cancer and autoimmune diseases appear because the immune system is not able to detect what is self and normal and what is not .

I kind of stumbled into transplantation because a job became available to work with a very good immunologist called Prof. John Kirby. Then I got a lectureship and shared an office with another transplant immunologist and we then started collaborating with a transplant Surgeon called David Talbot, who is now a great friend and climbing partner.

      Hi Asier,

I was always interested in diseases. I thought I would become a doctor, but then started doing research projects during my undergraduate degree as extra credit. I enjoyed it so much I decided to do a PhD instead of medical school. I am glad I made this choice and working now on vaccine development.

      Cheers!

      Carmen
