I discovered the presence and activity of some proteins important for bacteria to adhere to human cells. It resulted in two publications for me from my PhD and thus allowed me to finish my PhD in three years. All good stuff!
I was one of the first people to show that during inflammation there is a sugar on the surface of blood cells that gets sulphate added to it. This means the cells can bind proteins called chemokines that act as signals to tell immune cells that there is inflammation at that location and to migrate through the blood vessel into the tissue/organ.
